2-Day Workshop on Research Design and Data Analysis using Excel
Prof Usha introduced both the speakers and there were about 120 participants who participated in this workshop.
1st Day Workshop: It was on Research Design which was conducted by Prof Veena Shenoy, on 8th July 2020 from 10 am to 12 pm.
The topics which were covered were: –
- Introduction to research
- Terminologies in research
- Research design with sampling techniques
- Questionnaire Development
- Participants profile/Descriptive statistics
So, the topic started with introducing research which is a process to discover new knowledge. Part of the research process involves testing the hypothesis and then examining the results of these tests as they relate to both the hypothesis and the world around you. When a researcher forms a hypothesis, these act as a map through the research study. There were also different terminologies in research like accuracy, affective measure, aggregate, etc. The research design with sampling techniques was one of the interesting topics for all the participants as sampling technique plays a very vital role while conducting research.
Questionnaire development was one of the best topics to be explained under research as people come up here with different ideas on which they are going to work for research. And lastly, the Participants profile, where one should describe the participants in your experiment, including who they were), how many there were, and how they were selected and descriptive statistics provide simple summaries about the sample and the measures.
So, with these interesting facts about research, followed with a Q&A section; the 1st-day workshop on Research Design ended.
2nd Day workshop: It was on Data analysis using excel which was conducted by Prof.Sheetal Mahender, on 9th July 2020 from 10 am to 12 pm.
The topics which were covered were: –
- T-test
- Anova
- Chi-square
- Correlation
- Regression
The workshop started with introducing sampling, regarding how we will be working on a particular dataset, and how with different tools we can generate different tools, based on the stated null hypothesis or alternate hypothesis. It started with input and output- as in which is the independent variable and which one is the dependent variable. Different non-probability samplings are: –
-
- Convenient sampling
- Judgemental sampling
- Quota sampling
- Snowball sampling
Also, probability sampling like:-
-Randomly doing sampling
-Simple random sampling:
- Manual approach
- Computerized approach
Where, in probability sampling, we make use of the term element because we know the population.
- Stratified sampling is Homogeneous sampling.
- Proportionate sampling.
- Cluster sampling: heterogeneous, geographic wise or area sampling
- Another sampling: Combination method mix of non-probability sampling and cluster sampling
So, these were the sampling techniques which was covered in the workshop
Coming to the practical part of using the dataset in excel and making analysis, a particular dataset was provided to all the participants on which they were going to work. It covered the basics of data analysis. To perform all the tests like t-test, chi-square, etc all the participants were informed to download the Data analysis tool on which all had to perform the tests (as we all know excel makes the work easier through its different functions). It thus becomes easier to perform all tests and analyze, based on the results which would prove whether the problem satisfies the Null or Alternate hypothesis.
So, these were the overall topics that were covered in the day 2-day workshop. The workshop ended with a thank you note for all the participants and the professors, as delivered by Prof Usha.
