Entrepreneurship in education is born with an innate need to create systems and solutions, build and grow it, creating an impact. India has almost 1.5 million schools, 38,000 colleges, and 760 universities as per Ministry of Human Resource Development, which translates to 1 school per 200 school-goers and 1 college for 3,700 college-goers. The gap in education cannot be solved by the system alone. Entrepreneurship in the education sector is needed to bring in inclusivity, bridge the knowledge gap, and usher in new methods of learning.
What’s Happening in the Indian Education Sector
There are public programs to solve this crisis. IGNOU is the biggest open university in the world and its 4 million students have received quality education inexpensively. The current Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tasked Niti Ayog to recommend changes in the education system.
The Azim Premji Foundation founded by Chairman of Wipro Azim Premji has been working to set new standards for teacher training and research for education, and to update the quality of primary education in India.
Another powerful example we can think of is Byju’s, founded by Byju Raveendran. It started by helping students prepare for competitive exams like CAT, GMAT, IAS, JEE, etc. They also help school students learn through apps interactively.
Government’s Role in Promoting Entrepreneurship in Education
In the past few years, investment in education is coming from private and government sources. Government of India’s ‘Startup India’ promotes financing from banks to startups from any sector.
The Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is another program to encourage entrepreneurship in education. Under this mission, DIY workspaces are set up where ideas of students take shape. A similar initiative at Jammu & Kashmir is called Udaan.
To select students to study at top B-schools across the country, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) teamed up with the IIMS to conduct Combined Aptitude Test (CAT). There are many other examples of success in of entrepreneurship in education.
