Librarian Day

Librarian day

On the 12th of August, India celebrates Librarian day in honour of Dr S.R. Ranganathan – a national professor of library science. ISBR celebrated Librarian day with full spirit. The guest speaker for the day was Nagappa Veerappa Bakkannanavar, Assistant General Manager and Head of Information Resource at Tata Consultancy Services.

The program began at two in the afternoon for duration of two hours. The event began with a general introduction to what the librarian day is all about followed by honouring of the late Dr S.R.Ranganathan. The gathering was first addressed by the college librarian himself, who welcomed the guest speaker and introduced him. Upon introduction, Dr Nagappa Veerappa Bakkannanavar subsequently took over. His speech focused on the age of industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 deals with the arrival of artificial intelligence and automation. A brief insight into how the world has now evolved to create a new series of perspectives and practices was given. Industry 4.0 is more agile and efficient and the level of human competency needed to cope with such mechanisms is also high. A few questions pertaining to the connection between the growth of industries and librarian day was posed to the students. The questions were met with enthusiasm and answered accordingly. The connection between the two happened to lie in the accessing of data and information that is widely available nowadays, how even Google works on the basis of indexing.

Being students who have just stepped into the college, a few words of advice and encouragement were also given by the speaker. Daring to dream, aspirations, realization of potential and excelling at whatever we do (DARE)-makes all the difference in our careers. Also the concept of ASK- attitude, skill and knowledge was also introduced. Students were not asked to think outside the box but rather break the box or the conventional method of thinking to give way to new ideas. New perspectives about how much more resourceful and competent an individual can be beyond their realizations were put forth. Mr Nagappa Veerappa Bakkannanavar left the stage leaving a lingering message to never underestimate one’s self.
